Weekly Prep Thread 27 Jan - 2 Feb

Ah, what the hell. I'll start it.

Over the weekend I decided to augment our food preps. We have a solid six months put back in canned and dry goods that we rotate, but are really lacking in the long-term food storage arena (except for grains, legumes, pasta, and MRE's-we are set 'til the second coming on all that).

This is what I ordered:

Emergency Essentials
Almond Poppyseed Muffin Mix #10 Cans- 2
Muffin Mix With Imitation Raspberries #10 Cans- 2
Honey White Bread and Roll Mix #10 Cans- 8

MREdepot
36 Cans (case) of Bega Canned Cheddar Cheese - 2
24 Cans (case) of Red Feather Butter - 1

Honeyville Grain
Powdered Whole Eggs #10 Can - 3
Freeze Dried Raspberries #10 Can - 2
Freeze Dried Strawberries #10 Can - 2
Instant Milk Substitute #10 Can - 2
Honeyville Farms Flavor-Like Chicken Chunks 2.5 Pound #10 Cans - 3
Honeyville Farms Flavor-Like Beef Chunks 2.5 Pound #10 Can - 3
Oxygen Absorbers, 500cc (100ct) - 1

Bluechipgroup.net
Morning Moo White (Milk Substitute) #10 Cans - 6

HerbalCom.com
Mustard seed powder yellow - 1 lb.
Dill weed c/s - 1 lb.
Chili pepper powder, mild - 1 lb.
Garlic flakes - 1 lb.
Curry powder - 2 lbs.
Onion flakes - 1 lb.
Pepper black medium grind - 1 lb.
Pepper black coarse grind - 1 lb.
Nutmeg powder - 1 lb.
Mustard seed whole yellow - 1 lb.
Cinnamon powder, 3% oil - 1 lb.

USA Emergency Supply
Dehydrated Potato Dices #10 cans - 6

Some observations:

*MREdepot offers a 21% discount (discount code WARRIFLES) and has EXCELLENT customer service and warp speed shipping.

*HerbalCom.com has freakin' GREAT prices and ships for $5.25 no matter how much you order.

*HoneyvilleGrain ships for $4.49 no matter how much you order.

*EmergencyEssentials ships for $9.00 up to 7 #10 cans, $12.00 for 8 cans and over.

*Bluechipgroup.net had the best total price (product + shipping) on "Morning Moos" milk that I found.

The herbs are getting packed in mylar w/ 02 absorbers.

Eventually NLT December I hope to have us with a year's worth of vittles put back for the NCO family.

I figure this shopping spree will keep me satisfied until we get the "economic stimulus" from the .gov... Man, that just sounds dirty, doesn't it?

So how are the other GIM'ers coming along?

Great, I never heard of that one. http://www.herbalcom.com/

Did you take into account any non hybrid seeds? Should not forget them. :s9:

It is such a tough call between gold and preps. We could probably eat for about 4 months just off our food storage. I've been focusing lately on reloading equipment. I'm working on getting set up to cast my own 9mm bullets. I did put aside 60-70 pounds of lead wheel weights (free!) last week.

Besides casting equipment, I'm puting the rest toward gold.

Two Costco runs this week so far .... one more tomorrow. Heaved up on meats (I have 3 freezers), canned soups (stocks, and bases for other dishes), pasta, Ragu, all OTC meds, and soaps.

200lbs of feed corn for deer that run in my lot, and distilling. Will add 400 more lbs this week.

Going to the brew store this week and buy 10-20 beer kits (makes 5 gals each).

Oh yeah .... just put in a new order for some ASE's @ apmex 30 min ago. So expect silver to tank tonight.

More to come ..... :smokin:

Ordered 500 more rounds of 45 ACP. Going to buy a family member a pistol this week and having a locksmith over to do some work at the house. I need to get my hands on a decent size water filtration systemm, make a few trips to SAMs club soon, and also pick up another 3 or so 20lb propane tanks.

PM purchases are on hold until i am more prepared to survive without modern immenities.

Rich, your ASE's will be fine, but...

I have a question, you say "Heaved up on meats (I have 3 freezers)" IF, TSHTF tomorrow what would you do with all the meat in the freezer? Or, what are you expecting? Here's what I am thinking. Electricity would be gone. I can produce electricity for maybe a week, well, maybe a while longer.. Then what?

SB

I have a Trace Inverter 220v that is powered by 16 backup batteries, a 25,000 watt generator, and enough fuel for at least 6 months. If I have to I will can/dry any meat. I think that fuel maybe easier to get WTSHTF than most think .... depending on the cause. After 4 months of off-line will trade food, tobacco, alcohol, ammo, or last but not least PM's for fuel. I want to install some solar panels on the roof. that would carry my ability to stay off line into years without worrying about fuel.

This has probably been covered in other survival threads, but...

Can someone recommend a simple, BASIC survival book for beginners?

Sample topics:

1) If I'm in the woods, what is edible and what is poisonous?

2) What should I do if I'm sick and don't have medicine? When do I know it's time to apply a tourniquet? When should I induce vomiting, and when should I not?

3) What are the 10 most important things to have on hand because they are the most difficult important things to acquire from nature?

etc...

There are some classics. Here are two by Brad Angier:

"Basic Wilderness Survival Skills"
http://books.google.com/books?id=h2U...Z2YM#PPA136,M1

"Feasting Free on Wild Edibles"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0811...28#reader-link

Another good one on medical issues is: "Where there is no Doctor, A Village Health Care Handbook"

"Naked into the Wilderness" -
If I remember correctly it majorly overlooks the issue of water.

"Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival" -
I recommend reading all of Tom Brown's books. You might enjoy "The Tracker". It will give you a basic understanding of Tom Brown's perspective.
